Welcome to Family Support Services
Hi, I’m Bronwyn Whelan the Family Services Coordinator at Sturt Street Children’s Centre. I am Social Work trained and have many years of experience in working with families. My role at the Centre is to support and strengthen families and to support parents in their parenting journey. This is done through a range of ways. I am able to meet with people to provide short term counselling, parenting support, advice and referral on any issue that is impacting on the family. Children’s Centres seek to enhance and strengthen all families to help promote the wellbeing of all family members but with a particular focus on developing secure attachments for children with their caregivers and enhancing positive family relationships.
Sturt Street Children’s Centre also runs parenting groups:
Circle of Security Parenting:
At times all parents feel lost or without a clue about what our child might need from us. Imagine what it might feel like if you were able to make sense of what your child was really asking from you. The Circle of Security® Parenting™ program is based on decades of research about how secure parent-child relationships can be supported and strengthened.
Learning Objectives of the Training:
• Understand your child’s emotional world by learning to read the emotional needs
• Support your child’s ability to successfully manage emotions
• Enhance the development of your child's self esteem
• Honor your innate wisdom and desire for your child to be secure
Bringing Up Great Kids:
The Bringing Up Great Kids’ programs and resources support parents and carers to:
learn more about the origins of their own parenting style and how it can be more effective;
identify the important messages they want to convey to their children and how to achieve this;
learn more about brain development in children and its influence on their thoughts, feelings and behaviour;
understand the meaning of children’s behaviour;
discover how to overcome some of the obstacles getting in the way of them being the kind of parent they would like to be; and
discover ways for parents to take care of themselves and to find support when they need it.
Marte Meo is an approach that helps support children’s social and emotional development. I am able to work with parents to help them learn how to support their child’s social and emotional development.
