Library news

It is hard to believe that it is term 4 already. The library will be a busy place this term, especially during week 6 when we are holding the Scholastic Book Fair. The book fair is a wonderful opportunity for students to choose books to read over the summer holidays as well as to purchase birthday and Christmas presents. It is also a wonderful way to support the library’s collection. We receive 20 % cash from all sales.

The Book Fair will be open on Monday, November 15 all day for students to preview and make a wish list that they will bring home. See below for purchasing times:

AM PM
Monday, Nov 15: N/A 3:15-3.45
Tuesday, Nov 16: 8:30-9:30 3:15-3.45
Wednesday, Nov 17: 8:30-9:15 3:15-3:45
Thursday, Nov 18: 8:30-9:15 N/A

We will need volunteers to help with sales and supervision at the above times. If you are able to help at any of these times, please print off the form below. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

book fair volunteer form

Just a reminder that parents will need to accompany children to the book fair this year due to the construction of the gym.

We only have a few more weeks for the birthday book program so if you want to purchase a book for your child’s birthday, please talk to Andrea or Sue in the next few weeks. We have a variety of books to choose from. Once purchased, a book plate will be put inside with your child’s name and birthday and it will be a part of our library collection.

letter from the Principal

Dear Families,

We come to the end of another hectic yet successful term. I am always amazed at the energy throughout our school. From the Governing Councillors, the members of various Committees, the parent volunteers helping in class or on excursions and the dedicated sporting coaches, all of whom are generous with their time. Thank you.
Our teaching staff feel a sense of accomplishment when we review site data and see improvement.

For example the Yard Behaviour data showed a significant decrease in the numbers of students who had hurt or harassed others.

We continue to have a focus on reinforcing positive play behaviour and teaching social skills through the Friendly Schools and Families Program, the Child Protection Curriculum and Program Achieve. Cross age sharing between classes has also been a great way of supporting responsibility and social learning across the school.

We believe that:-
• the Behaviour Code has been more consistently implemented.
• strategies to encourage more active play through taking groups to the park at lunchtime, boys or girls only park day, utilizing the ELC yard and setting up a variety of activities each lunchtime have been successful.
• opening the library or technology room has provided other options.

Literacy Data
Running Record reading levels for all Year 1/2 students have been assigned and forwarded to DECS. Our data shows that children continue to read above expected levels for their age group. The Year 3,5,7 NAPLAN results were posted to parents last week. Our students showed overall improvement in Writing, Spelling, Punctuation, Grammar and Numeracy while the Reading mean score was consistent with last year.

Facilities
During the two closure days, ICT infrastructure was upgraded. Each teaching unit now has wireless connections. A projector is being installed in the technology room along with new cabling and power points to tidy the floor space.
The zip track blinds which have been installed in the O’Brien Street and Maxwell Street verandahs seem to have prevented rain sweeping through the doorways and protecting carpeted areas.
The Multi Purpose Hall project is one week behind schedule due to the recent wet conditions. However, foundations are being excavated ready for the slab to be poured this week.

Fitness & Fundraising
Our community fundraiser, Jump Rope for Heart, raised $3,400 with 10% being returned to the school.
This is an outstanding amount for a small school so congratulations to the children.

The Fun Run on Monday was another vigorous event. We were very pleased at the level of participation and hope that the students continue to be active and stay healthy.

Best wishes for a safe and happy holiday.

Room 3 Class News

This term we welcomed 15 children to the mid-year Reception class and together we have created a community of learners and inquirers. The science focus for the term has been on ‘materials’. Some of the children designed their own experiments, others conducted their own ‘digs’ and all children collected items from home to make a ‘feely box’, which they enthusiastically shared at school. As part of learning about man-made and natural materials we visited the Wirranendi Wetlands this week. Excitement was building as we reached the bridge.

As we crossed the bridge we stopped to examine the materials in the trash rack below. The children asked why the materials were there and we prompted them to think about what would happen to the environment if these plastic bags, drink cans, straws and other rubbish remained in the water.

The children had worked extensively with the Science Teacher, Kathleen Patitsas, doing experiments and learning about pollution in waterways.

After crossing the bridge the children quietly approached the wetland and saw some Purple Swamp Hens and Pacific Black Ducks. They worked out that the Swamp Hens were protecting their nests and probably had eggs or babies in them.

There was more to come – a big run in the open field, climbing trees, stepping in the mud with rubber boots on and pretending to be archeologists by digging for items from the past. As this is the former site of the Adelaide City Dump, the children found pieces of jugs, plates, cups and other ornaments. Very exciting!

Next term we welcome four children – Lottie Sayers, Joshua Nguyen, Kalypso Louca and Zara Dirk and their families to our class community.

Community Gardening

Community Gardening – For our children and the community

The South West Community is a diverse community. Equally the Sturt Street Community School is rich in culture, history, and diversity. The School cares for and educates children from birth to Year 7.

The doors to the School are always open to the community and many community groups share the School classrooms and facilities.

You may be aware that there has been a significant and ongoing issue within the local community about sharing the community garden in Maxwell Street. The community garden is part of the School site. It is owned by the Education Department.

The community garden is not accessible to the whole community nor to the children. Instead of providing children with opportunity to access a valuable learning space, barriers and padlocked fences have been erected.

The School took up an offer to participate in an ABC Stateline program to be broadcast on
Friday 24 September 2010 that will report on this issue. In that program I will be putting forward the School’s point of view.

When the School closed in 1996, the land was being used as a community garden by gardeners from the Adelaide Day Centre which is associated with the Catholic Sisters of Mercy. The Adelaide Day Centre has use of a large vegetable garden behind the Adelaide Gaol and access to other gardens in the community is also available to them.

Since the School reopened in 2004, the Adelaide Day Centre has declined the offer of the School’s Governing Council to share the garden with the School and its children. Despite a number of efforts by the School to negotiate shared use of the garden, it remains unresolved leaving the children without access to the garden.

The School has made representations to the relevant Ministers and local Members of Parliament and is working with them to resolve this issue.

We have a solution and we find it when we look at this issue through the eyes of our children.

The School’s interest is the children’s education and the broader community. Like we open our doors to the community, let’s open the garden to the whole community.

The children can use the garden to learn about and take care of our environment, to explore and to taste organic food. That’s how they learn.

The adult community gardeners can be accommodated around the educational needs of the children and could share and work the garden and plant in the early mornings, later in the day or on weekends or school holidays.

We thank parents, caregivers, staff and the general community for your strong support to ensure that the right thing is done, and we look forward to everyone participating in a truly community garden.

Letter from the Principal

Dear Families,
We always look for opportunities to draw on the talents of people in the community. Instrumental teacher, Jan McAskill who teaches here each Monday and Wednesday is a great vocalist and has sung in bands for many years. We are thrilled that she has agreed to work with the Senior Choir and we look forward to hearing them perform at assemblies.

A number of children have also been given the opportunity to be involved in drama classes. Carina Gun, a registered teacher and Nick Buckland have been working with students fortnightly and are enjoying watching children’s skills and confidence grow. They have had extensive experience on stage and screen and are now enjoying passing on their love of acting to others.
The children work on specific areas of acting such as characterization, mime, improvisation, script analysis, stage skills and voice work, giving them the opportunity to develop their creativity and imagination.

Acting is all about observing and reacting to others and therefore the classes also help to develop student’s social skills by enhancing their verbal and non-verbal communication skills. Teaching children resilience and optimism and finding positive solutions to problems can give them to the tools to help them to cope with what life has to offer in the future.

At Sturt Street Community School we are planning for a bright and exciting future. Our new Strategic Plan will look ahead to 2015 – It’s all about Valuing our children……Building their future. It’s everyone’s Plan – so please join us at a parent workshop session to hear about the directions and priorities for the next 5 years, and have your say.

After the sessions, your Education Committee and Governing Council will finalise the Plan and it will be communicated to all parents, students and staff.

2011 Classes
The school is already gearing up for next year, planning our teacher vacancies and classroom structures. We are keen to know our expected enrolments to assist with this planning. Could you please inform the school via email or the enclosed slip if your child will not be attending Sturt Street Community School in 2011. We have a number of children who are on a waiting list and we would like to offer them a placement if your child is leaving school.

Class Allocation
At the beginning of Term 4 we commence the class placement process. If you have any comments or preferences in relation to your child’s placement for next year could you please put them in writing addressed to me. All comments will be considered. However, as it is very difficult to meet all requests and the final decision on class placements will rest with the leadership team.

Regards,
Pat Cardone – Principal
