At Sturt Street Preschool/Kindy we value children's voice and view children to be capable, competent and facilitators of their own learning.


We embrace every child's individuality and culture, supporting children independently based on the child's particular needs and interests.


We cultivate children's sense of agency and dispositions to be resilient, persistent and confident learners. While we also explore the concept of emotional literacy - understanding ourselves and each other: empowering children to cope and manage on their own, providing children with the tools to be empathetic, compassionate and responsible citizens.


We believe children learn best through play, as they discover and explore the world around them fostering independence, curiosity, wonder and the belief to be successful life long learners.


Play is an opportunity for children to learn in an engaging and fun filled environment, providing  opportunities of learning through and inquiry lead curriculum in conjunction with the Early Years Learning Framework,


DECD Numeracy and literacy indicators, the Child Protective Curriculum and the National Quality Standard with a current rating of 'EXCEEDING'.


Children are encouraged to take ownership of their own learning journey as they navigate and investigate their learning through real life experiences, nature, sustainable practices, risk taking and sensory experiences.


We are strongly inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach to learning and value the environment as the Third Teacher.


We provide open ended and extended play experiences, supporting STEM concepts, imagination and creative thinking through visual and performing arts.

Opportunities for deep dialogue, research, repetition and extension are embedded in the curriculum through intentional and incidental learning opportunities throughout the day, welcoming children's questioning techniques and critical thinking.



At Sturt Street Preschool we are incredibly lucky to be a part of a whole school community (age 0-Year 7), reinforcing and valuing a seamless and positive transition for those living in the CBD from Childcare to Preschool to school.


This encompasses a progressively gentle transition to school program for Preschoolers, the year before commencing school.


This also exposes children to the school environment and routines, inclusive of Reception visits, collaborative activities/projects, utilisation of school facilities (e.g. access to the hall and library borrowing program) and joint participation in the community events, such as school Assemblies.


We extend ourselves out to the wider community as we engage and embark on regular excursions and incursions throughout the year.
