OSHC

The school offers a child centred, inclusive, & innovative out of school hour’s program.

We are open between 7:45am until 8:45am each morning and 3:10pm until 6:00pm each afternoon during term time. During the holidays (except public holidays) we are open from 7:45am until 6:00pm. We are located in the O’Brien Street building. Enrolment forms are available from the school office or the OSHC area when staff are available, alternatively you can download a PDF copy to email to us

As enrolments are limited by the Department of Family and Community Services’ policy, an enrolment form must be completed before a child may attend the program.

Sturt Street Community School is guided by the Department’s rules of Priority of Access when enrolling students. We are currently rated as “Meeting National Quality Standard” by the Education & Early Childhood Services Registration & Standards Board of South Australia.

Fees apply for the program, though most parents should be eligible to receive childcare benefits.

Sturt Street Community School OSHC Service Philosophy

At Sturt Street Community School
OSHC, we believe children grow best in environments where they feel
safe, connected and valued. Our program is grounded in the understanding that wellbeing, learning and behaviour are shaped through relationships and attunement. We therefore prioritise relational practice, recognising that the quality of interactions between children, educators and the community has the greatest influence on children’s sense of belonging and development.

Relational Wellbeing

We believe that relationships are the foundation of wellbeing. Children are more able to explore, participate and regulate their emotions when they feel safe and connected to those around them.

Educators intentionally create opportunities for connection through everyday interactions, shared activities and collaborative play. By prioritising connection before correction, we support children to develop trust, confidence and empathy within a supportive community.

Through these relationships children are supported to:

  • develop a strong sense of identity and belonging
  • understand their emotions and the emotions of others
  • build social confidence and positive peer relationships
  • navigate challenges with guidance and support.

Emotional Awareness and Regulation

We recognise that children arrive at OSHC carrying the experiences and energy of their school day. Our program supports children to notice, name and work with their feelings, helping them build emotional awareness and regulation skills over time.

Educators use moments of connection, reflection and shared experience to support children to understand themselves and others. These moments often occur naturally within play, conversation and group activities, where children can pause, reflect and reconnect with those around them.

By nurturing emotional awareness, we aim to support children to grow in empathy, resilience and self-understanding.

Play, Rhythm and Shared Experience

Play and creativity are essential ways children connect with others and express themselves. Our program values play-based learning, creative exploration and shared experiences as powerful ways to support children’s wellbeing and engagement.

Activities involving movement, rhythm, music, art and collaborative play provide opportunities for children to:

  • experience connection and cooperation
  • develop confidence and creativity
  • build positive peer relationships
  • explore ideas and solve problems together.

These shared experiences often create natural moments of connection that strengthen relationships and group belonging.

Community and Participation

We believe children are active contributors to their community. Their voices, ideas and perspectives help shape the experiences we offer.

Children are encouraged to:

  • contribute ideas to the program
  • participate in decision-making
  • take on mentoring roles
  • support and care for one another.

Our Respectations Charter, developed with children, reflects our shared commitment to respect, responsibility and belonging within our community.

Respect for Culture and Diversity

We recognise and celebrate the diversity of our community. We are committed to creating an environment where every child and family feels respected, valued and included.

We acknowledge we live and work on Kaurna Country, and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the First Peoples of this land and recognise the importance of culture, identity and connection to Country.

Our program seeks to honour diverse cultural perspectives and support children to develop understanding and respect for others.

Reflective Practice

Our educators are reflective practitioners who continuously learn from children, families and each other. Through observation, reflection and collaboration we adapt our program to support children’s evolving needs, interests and wellbeing.

By nurturing relationships, creativity and belonging we aim to create a community where children feel supported to be themselves, connect with others and grow well together.
